Media Matters’ Director of Rapid Response has a long-standing internet troll, wherein he claims that the “AR” in “AR-15” stands for “assault rifle,” and then laughs when conservatives correct him, telling him that it actually stands for “ArmaLite Rifle.”
Here’s a snippet of Andrew Lawrence’s behavior from Friday night:
Media Matters claims that it is “dedicated to comprehensively monitoring, analyzing, and correcting conservative misinformation
in the U.S. media.”
With that in mind, I approached Lawrence to ask him whether he found it appropriate to spread disinformation himself, under the guise of an internet troll. After all, many on the political left do believe that “assault rifles” are legal in America, and those who do tend to point to the AR-15 – a semi-automatic rifle – as an example of an “assault rifle.” Failed presidential candidate and sitting U.S. Congressman Eric Swalwell (D-CA) said as much recently on “Tucker Carlson Tonight.”
But Lawrence was totally ambivalent about spreading lies, despite his organization’s stated mission.
“It literally does not matter at all,” he said:
He also said that none of his 78,000 followers took it seriously, which of course is an unprovable claim. In fact, it’s likely the opposite. See Swalwell’s clip on “Tucker” for evidence.
Media Matters Editor-at-Large Parker Malloy later jumped in and endorsed Lawrence’s lies.
“One of my favorite long-running bits:
@ndrew_lawrence logging on to declare that the ‘AR’ in ‘AR-15’ stands for ‘Assault Rifle,’ and watching as people have complete meltdowns replying to him,” she said.

Later in our conversation, Lawrence doubled down on the troll.
“It’s not a lie though,” he said. “AR stands for Assault Rifle.”
If members of the supposed media truthfulness watchdog are blatant liars – and defend their blatant lies by saying that the lies don’t matter – why should you trust the media truthfulness watchdog?
The answer, of course, is that you shouldn’t. Media Matters is a joke.
You can read more about their dishonesty, and that of the rest of the mainstream media in my forthcoming book Enemies: The Press vs. The American People, which will be released Tuesday.
