Liberian Marriage Fraud Scandal Exposed While Ilhan Omar Scrutinzed

In the middle of Rep. Ilhan Omar’s marriage scandal, which involves allegedly marrying her brothera Liberian immigrant living in Rhode Island has been exposed for his own fraudulent marriage.

What: The Providence Journal reported that Prince Mark Boley, a Liberian soccer player, was convicted earlier this week in U.S. District Court in Providence after lying to immigration officials and providing false information in order to gain legal status in the U.S. In 2016, two months before his visa was set to expire, Boley married his wife.

During a routine interview with immigration officials when Boley was applying for citizenship, his wife happily showed the officials a series of text messages in an attempt to prove their marriage was legitimate, at which time a  message arrived from her lover concerning their relationship. Boley’s wife was granted immunity for testifying against him. He is facing up to 5 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

Why It Matters: This case signifies the willingness of the federal government to prosecute cases of marriage fraud as a way to circumvent immigration laws. Omar and her “husband” could be facing similar charges in the future.
