The official position of this blog is that Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is the ringleader of the GOP establishment, and an enemy of the Trump administration who is blocking Trump’s America First immigration agenda. (RELATED: EXCLUSIVE: D.C. Insider Explains Why The Swamp is Terrified of Kris Kobach). But every now and then, McConnell trolls the political left into oblivion. He’s become sort of a meme in right wing media. Yesterday, was one of those moments.

Who: Mitch McConnell

What: McConnell was responding Tuesday to a reporter who tried to shame him because his great-great-grandfather owned slaves, and asked him if he would support reparations.

“You know, I find myself once again in the same position as President Obama,” McConnell replied. “We both oppose reparations, and we both are the descendants of slaveholders.”

When: Tuesday

Where: A press conference in Washington, D.C.

Why It Matters: The debate about reparations for black Americans is – somehow, in 2019 – heating up again. Several Democratic Party presidential candidates, including Sens. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) and Kamala Harris (D-CA) have made reparations part of their presidential platforms. Obviously, such legislation is a pipe dream, and any candidate who touts it is doing what Democrats have done to black Americans for decades – promising government programs and benefits on which they will never deliver simply to garner votes.
