Media Silent After Obama Called Baltimore Residents ‘Criminals’ and ‘Thugs’ In 2015

There was no mainstream media outrage after former President Barack Obama called Baltimore residents “criminals” and “thugs” after mass riots in the crime and rat infested city in 2015.

Obama described Baltimore residents as “criminals and thugs who tore up the place” after Freddie Gray was arrested and died in police custody, and locals subsequently rioted and looted the city. Josh Earnest, then Obama’s spokesman, defended the former president who refused to back down from his comments.

“Whether it’s arson or, you know, the looting of a liquor store … those were thuggish acts,” he said. “And when you’re looting up a convenience store or you’re throwing a cinder block at a police officer, you’re engaging in thuggish behavior and that’s why the President used that word.”

And that was the end of it. No emotional CNN segments, no name-calling from congresswomen – no outrage at all.

But when Trump noted Saturday that Baltimore is not exactly the model American city, calling out Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-MD) who has treated Trump with utter contempt it for nearly three years, the media turned the exchange into a national crisis.

Trump blasted the congressman on Saturday.

“Rep, Elijah Cummings has been a brutal bully, shouting and screaming at the great men & women of Border Patrol about conditions at the Southern Border, when actually his Baltimore district is FAR WORSE and more dangerous. His district is considered the Worst in the USA,” he said. “As proven last week during a Congressional tour, the Border is clean, efficient & well run, just very crowded. Cumming District is a disgusting, rat and rodent infested mess. If he spent more time in Baltimore, maybe he could help clean up this very dangerous & filthy place.”
