An “AfroFuturist” youth group in Detroit was set to charge white people twice as much as “people of color” for tickets to an upcoming music festival, until The Rundown reported the story, which quickly went viral.
Who: The AfroFuture Youth Group.
Prices are determined as follows:
But the group reversed course Monday after significant backlash, according to multiple reports. EventBrite, the site that the group used to sell tickets, said that they do not allow racially discriminatory practices like what the youth group was doing.
“For the safety of our community, family, elders who received threats from white supremacists,& youth who were subjected to seeing racist comments on our IG pg, [sic], Afrofuture Fest has changed our ticketing model to $20 General Admission & suggested donation for nonPOC on [EventBrite],” the group announced on Twitter.
It provided no evidence of such threats.
Where: Detroit, Michigan.
When: The group moved back to a single ticket price model Monday.
Why It Matters: Racial tensions in America are high, as nearly every aspect of American life has become political, and is now seen through the lens of race. The pricing model for tickets, which charged white people more than “people of color,” was a perfect exemplar of reverse racism – or as we like to call it at The Rundown – racism.
