Presidential candidate Robert Francis “Beto” O’Rourke thought he was playing to an entirely sympathetic audience when he began a Town Hall campaign stop in Aurora, Colorado where, in 2012, a gunman entered a movie theater and killed 12 people and wounded 50. But he was wrong.
At the beginning of the event, O’Rourke repeated the vow he made during the September 12 presidential debate calling for the confiscation of AR-15, AK-47 guns, saying “who’s with me on this?”.
Lauren Boebert, a 32 year-old mother who drove three hours from aptly named Rifle, Colorado, spoke out saying, “I’m here to say: Hell no you’re not.”
“I have four children, am five feet, 100 pounds, I cannot really defend myself with a fist . . . I want to know how you’re going to legislate that because a criminal breaks the law, so all you’re going to do is restrict law abiding citizens like myself,” she continued.
With a handgun holstered on her side, Boebert went on to say, “self-defense is a right that we have that will not be infringed in the United States.”
Deliberately missing the point, predictably O’Rourke dismissed Boebert’s concerns.
“Do I care more about how upset somebody is who owns a weapon of war that they don’t need for hunting or self-defense, or do I care more about families who have lost a child?” he replied.
When pressed about how a buyback program would work, the candidate skirted the issue of confiscation and squeamishly said he hoped Americans would abide by the law.
In interviews following the September 12 debate however, O’Rourke insisted that the sale of high impact, high velocity round guns like the AR-15 and AK-47 should be banned and that if individuals do not comply with a mandatory gun buyback program they should be forceably confiscated. The stance has infuriated gun owners and advocates of the Second Amendment right to bear arms who believe this is the true political left position and the beginning of efforts to disarm Americans, leaving them defenseless again a government which wants to control them.
