Former U.S Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Director Tom Homan delivered a smack down to Democrats in a hearing in Congress about detention practices on Thursday.
Homan highlighted that many of the ICE practices that Democrats criticise President Donald J. Trump for, such as the “cages,” were started or ramped up during the Obama administration:
In the issue of transparency, let’s be factual about it… Be honest to the American people, you can’t point out faults in the Trump administration when it happened under the Obama administration! That’s dishonesty! It’s pathetic and sad!
Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-WA), vice chair of the House Subcommittee on Immigration and Citizenship, did not let him respond to comments that she had made. A Republican member yielded back to Homan later to let him continue:
Do you want to know why there are more than 50,000 people in detention? Do you want to know why there are 1 million illegal entries in the United States? It’s because you have failed to secure the border, you have failed to work with this President to close the three loopholes that we’ve asked you for two years to close! You have failed the American people!
Jayapal again refused to let him continue, which rightly infuriated him:
I am a taxpayer! You work for me!
Jayapal further attacked Homan in a tweet after the hearing was over, implying that he was racist:
Homan defended himself in an interview with Fox News on Friday:
I’m not gonna sit there and let them tell lies about my president, tell lies about the men and women of the Border Patrol and ICE… At a certain point it’s like, I’m not gonna shut up… Just because you have a gavel, doesn’t make you queen of the day, it doesn’t allow you to lie to the American people.”
