The Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) division said in a press release late last week that it has arrested more than 25,000 child sexual predators since 2003.
“Since the launch of Operation Predator in 2003, HSI has arrested more than 25,000 individuals for crimes against children, including the production and distribution of online child exploitation material, traveling overseas for sex with minors, and sex trafficking of children,” according to the press release. “In fiscal year 2019, more than 3,500 child predators were arrested by HSI special agents under this initiative and more than 1,000 victims identified or rescued.”
That press release detailed the conviction of Daniel Haughton, a Mississippi man who was sentenced to more than 17 years in prison for possessing and transporting child pornography.
HSI often works in conjunction with U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Both fall under the umbrella of DHS.
But the radical left, and even elected members of Congress, have been agitating for the abolishment — not just of ICE — but for DHS as a whole.
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) said that she was in favor of abolishing DHS in an interview with The New Yorker last year.
Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) called for DHS to be defunded almost exactly one year ago:
Indeed, even far-left candidates for Congress like Albert Lee, running in Oregon’s 3rd District, have added the abolishment of DHS to their campaign platforms:
Along with arresting child sex predators, DHS has other legitimate, practical functions.
It issued guidelines last week for dealing with inbound flights from China, the epicenter of the Wuhan Coronavirus, the effects and spreading of which medical professionals are still trying to understand. Those guidelines said:
To protect the American people from exposure to the coronavirus, on Sunday, February 2, 2020, the Acting Secretary Chad F. Wolf issued instructions supplementing a decision issued on January 31, 2020, and directed all flights from China and all passengers who have traveled to China within the last 14 days to be routed through one of eight U.S. airports, effective Sunday, February 2nd, 2020, for flights departing after 5:00 PM Eastern. Three additional airports will be added to the list of airports authorized to receive such flights beginning at various times on Monday, February 3, 2020. At these eleven airports, the United States Government has established enhanced screening procedures and the capacity to quarantine passengers, if needed.
DHS deployed resources to assist local authorities in combatting human trafficking in Miami during this year’s Super Bowl.
The NFL’s biggest game of the season is often an event during which such exploitation occurs. This year, three men were arrested in Miami during the week leading up to the Super Bowl, and face federal sex trafficking charges.
Given this information, is it in the best interest of the public to abolish DHS?
